Three Styles of Hearing Aids

There are three basic styles of hearing aids on the market today. Our Certified Hearing Aid Dispensers will help you choose the best style to meet your needs during your free consultation. Your style decision will be based on three criteria, your level of hearing loss, your lifestyle, and your personal preferences.

Here are the details of the different styles:

Receiver-in-Canal

  • Similar to behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids but with a smaller BTE unit
  • With the open receiver in the canal, sound quality is optimized
  • Best for mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

Behind-the-Ear

  • Excellent sound quality and performance
  • Larger size makes it easier to handle
  • For mild to profound hearing loss

In-the-Ear

Completely in Canal

  • The smallest and most discreet option, nearly undetectable
  • Custom molded to fit your ear
  • Best for mild to moderately severe hearing loss

Canal and Mini Canal

  • A very small hearing aid with a faceplate about the size of a dime
  • Both custom molded and off-the-shelf models available
  • Best for mild to moderately severe hearing loss

Half-Shell

  • A medium sized in-the-ear hearing aid
  • Custom molded to fit your ear
  • For mild to severe hearing loss

Full-Shell

  • The largest in-the-ear hearing aid style
  • The lowest cost in-the-ear hearing aid style
  • For mild to severe hearing loss
